While we can all accept that success in any guise will require some work, perhaps some talent and even a dash of opportunity, we can overlook the critical role that the right mindset plays. We can get so busy with the ‘doing’ part of achievement that we can neglect the ‘being’ part that speaks to the mindset that we harbour.
How we perceive challenges, setbacks, and even how we view our own potential in moving towards our goals and objectives, plays a critical role in our ability to get there. By shifting our mindset, we might well unlock new and previously untapped potentials in our personal growth and effectiveness.
The Difference Between a Fixed and Growth Mindset
The concept of fixed versus growth mindsets was coined by psychologist Carol Dweck from Stanford University where her research focused on how people perceive their own abilities. In this she identified two mindsets. The fixed mindset where individuals believe their intelligence, talents and abilities are set and cannot change. This would mean that you either have them or you don’t. While a growth mindset, by contrast, views one’s skills and abilities as things that can be developed through effort, learning and persistence.
When it comes to success then, each of these mindsets proffers its’ own approach to success. The fixed mindset will see someone avoiding challenges, fearing failure and even viewing effort as a pointless exercise if a successful outcome is not immediate. While a growth mindset is more likely to engage an attitude of embracing challenges, seeking to learn from failure and viewing effort made as the path to greater mastery. It’s clear then, that the latter would have greater merit and even if it may not be your default mode, it is possible to work to cultivate more of a growth mindset and enjoy the rewards that come with it.
Here are a few quick tips on how to get started:
Reframe Challenges as Opportunities
Instead of fearing failure, seek to view challenges as learning experiences. Ask better questions of yourself and about the event to draw out learning opportunities. Embrace that every obstacle is an opportunity to grow stronger and become more resilient.
Embrace the Power of a Work in Progress
If you’re challenged with a skill, remember and remind yourself that you just haven’t mastered it yet. Small shifts in language like this reinforces the idea that progress is possible with effort and even on the way. It sets up positive expectancy and reinforces a belief in the possibility of change.
Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results
Remember that success isn’t just about winning or outcomes, but also growth. Recognize and celebrate the work you’ve put in, even if the outcome isn’t ideal. Progress matters much more than perfection, which isn’t real anyway!
Seek Feedback and Learn from Setbacks
Instead of taking criticism personally or negatively, aim to use it as a tool for growth. The most successful people in the world actively seek feedback and continuously refine their approach based on feedback.
Surround Yourself with Growth-Oriented People
There’s an expression that ‘we become what we surround ourselves by’, and that has application here. The people around us will influence our mindset. Seek to engage with individuals who challenge you to grow, who encourage learning and propel you to improve.
Our mindset shapes our reality as much as the actions that we take. By embracing a growth mindset, you open doors to new possibilities, to greater resilience and to long-term success. By beginning to shift how you think about challenges and setbacks in your life and work, you unlock a whole new potential that turns a roadblock into a stepping stone on the road to your ultimate goals. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s worth it!
